The Central Crime Station of Hyderabad City police on Monday arrested former minister Dr P Shankar Rao in a dowry harassment case.

Based on a complaint lodged by Shankar Rao's daughter-in-law Vamsi Priya stating that her husband Sasank, sister-in-law Susmita, father-in-law Shankar Rao and mother-in-law Viswa Santi were harassing her more dowry, the CCS arrested the former minister. She accused them of torturing her physically and mentally.

It may be mentioned that Vamsi Priya had earlier filed a writ petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 19 seeking court's intervention in the case. She cited an order of a criminal court which directed all the accused to surrender and deposit their passports in the court. She alleged that the City Police did not implement the court's directions.

Meanwhile, Shankar Rao had dismissed the allegations and said that Vamsi Priya was making baseless allegations to defame him. He said that Vamsi Priya got separated from her husband about three years ago.
