Hyderabad, Sept 30:

 The ruling Congress has bagged all the five Zilla Parishad chairmen posts, three of them unanimously, for which byelections were held on Wednesday. The Congress also retained the Deputy Mayor post of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

Elections to the chairman posts of the Zilla Parishads of Kurnool in the Rayalaseema region, Vizianagaram and West Godavari in Coastal Andhra and Karimnagar and Adilabad, were held on Wednesday. Of these, Vizianagaram, West Godavari and Kurnool Zilla Parishad chiefs were elected unanimously while the chairmen of the Karimnagar and Adilabad were elected to the posts with the help of the members from other parties.

Mr Akepogu Venkatswamy (Kurnool), Mr Bellana Chandra Sekhar (Vizianagaram), Mr Meka Seshu Kumar (West Godavari), Mr Lakshaman Kumar (Karimnagar) and Mr Borepalli Ganapathi (Adilabad), all Congress were elected as the chiefs of the respective Zilla Parishads.

Mr Lakhsman Kumar, the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member from Dharmaram was elected to the Karimangar Zilla Parishad chief post with the support of 31 members, including six Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), six Telugu Desam Party (TDP) members and two Bharateeya Janata Party (BJP) members. Surprisingly, the rival parties members supported the Congress leader’s candidature only to defeat another Congress aspirant.

In Adilabad, Mr Borepalli Ganapathi, the ZPTC member from Kautala, won the election to the Zilla Parishad chief post with the support of 27 members, including some TRS members.

A report from Vijayawada says that Mr Philips Grifton has been unanimously elected to the post of Deputy Mayor of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, for which the poll was held at 11 am on Wednesday. Police made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident from being taken place in view of the bypoll.
