The State Government, bowing to the intense pressure by Telangana protagonists, on Friday decided to lift all police cases filed against students and others, who participated in the Telangana and Unified Andhra agitations.

The decision to lift 790 cases filed against 3,567 students will provide immense relief to the protestors.

According to sources, a statement would be issued in this connection within a week.

Whatever police cases filed against students before the constitution of the Srikrishna Commission, will be lifted.

The government’s decision would see that cases are lifted against students, who damaged public properties during agitation. However, the government decided not to lift cases against those who caused damage to private properties.

The government was also yet to take a decision on lifting cases against those who resorted to violence in the agitation.

In these cases the government is eliciting the opinion of legal experts before taking any decision. Both Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy and Director General of Police K Aravinda Rao were consulted in this regard.

The government’s decision was hailed by all political party and students union leaders.

However, the Telangana JAC and Seemandhra JAC leaders demanded that all the cases, including the cases registered for damaging private properties, be also lifted.
