Are Telugu Films Giving Heroines Meaningful Roles?

In Telugu films, heroines are getting more screen time these days. But how much importance does their character actually get is the biggest question mark. Falling in love with the hero, standing by him during difficult times and supporting him till the end. In many films, the heroine's role rarely goes beyond this. She may appear on screen more often, but that doesn't mean she has more to contribute to the story.

This has been a problem with commercial cinema for a long time. Even when the story offers scope for the heroine, her character often takes a back seat once the hero's journey begins. She is part of the film, but rarely becomes part of the decisions that move it forward. In some cases, removing her character would make little difference to the main story.

Of course, every heroine need not have a powerful role. But A simple character in a love story or family drama can also work well. What matters is how she is written. Does she have her own opinions? Does she make decisions? Does her presence bring something to the story that nobody else can?

Telugu cinema has seen actresses deliver memorable performances when the writing gives them enough substance. So the issue is not at all due to lack of talent but it comes down to the roles being written for them.

Filmmakers often talk about strong stories and interesting characters. Heroines should be part of that conversation too. Giving an actress more scenes is easy. Giving her character a purpose is what makes the difference.
