Rajinikanth Reveals Why He Chose Jailer 2 Over Baasha 2

Rajinikanth has explained why he agreed to Jailer 2 despite turning down sequel proposals for two of his popular films, Baasha and Petta. The superstar said he rarely feels the need to revisit successful movies, believing that a sequel should grow naturally from the original story rather than simply repeat its success.
The turning point came when Rajinikanth rewatched Jailer after its OTT release. He recalled the warning delivered by the antagonist just before his death, a powerful smuggling network would come after Muthuvel Pandian. The film had already planted clues about this larger criminal world, giving the story room to continue.
Rajinikanth also pointed to the valuable containers held by Muthuvel and the underworld figures who respect and support him because of his reputation as a jailer. These unresolved threads convinced him that Jailer had a genuine foundation for another chapter. He said he personally called director Nelson Dilipkumar and agreed to the sequel because the story demanded it.
Unlike Baasha 2, which Rajinikanth reportedly declined, or Petta 2, which director Karthik Subbaraj had considered extending through Vijay Sethupathi’s character, Jailer 2 offered a continuation rooted in the original film’s ending. Produced by Sun Pictures, the sequel features returning star Shiva Rajkumar and Mohanlal alongside Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, Yogi Babu and others. Scheduled for an October 15 release, it follows the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, which reportedly grossed around ₹604 crore worldwide.
