NRI held for dowry harassment

Suryapet Police on Monday took into custody a Non-Resident Indian for allegedly harassing his wife for additional dowry and later ditching her after a fortnight of their marriage. According to Inspector Madhusudhan Rao, the NRI, identified as Prathap Reddy, was arrested after his wife Sirisha (28), a resident of Suryapet in Nalgonda district, filed a complaint that her husband had ditched her after a fortnight of their getting married.

Sirisha filed a complaint with the Suryapet police on Sunday, in which she mentioned that she had got married to Prathap Reddy three years ago. She also claimed that her parents had given Rs 30 lakh to Prathap Reddy as dowry at the time of her marriage.

Prathap Reddy made it clear that he was not satisfied with the amount and demanded more. When she refused to burden her parents further, Prathap Reddy started to harass her. After a fortnight into their marriage, he left her. After waiting for three years for a rapprochement, Sirisha sought the help of police for justice. Police registered a case under Section 498(A) Indian Penal Code against Prathap Reddy and arrested him. Further investigations are going on.
