On the contrary, Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth had no significant hits in Tollywood till 1995.. In fact, Kamal Haasan was the number one star in Kollywood till late 80s and Rajini outsmarted Kamal Haasan only from early 90s.

But then, how could Rajinikanth get his image built in Tollywood? What factors made him achieving a market in Tollywood as well? According to analysts, media was primarily responsible for Rajini's market in Tollywood. 

It is a known news that Megastar Chiranjeevi occupied the number one position with his 'Khaidhi' movie released in 1983 and he became the highest paid actor in India with Rs.1.25 crores remuneration in 1992. Although there were no electronic and web media those days, print media has done an indispensable role in bringing out cine tidbits to the readers. Some of the media houses, then, opined that no Telugu stars could surpass Chiranjeevi's super stardom. That's why they reportedly started writing great about Rajini's range in Kollywood. In the meanwhile,, Rajini's 'Baasha' and 'Pedarayudu' (guest role) scored back to back hits in 1995 in united AP. Provided the impetus role of Telugu media and back to back hits with above movies, Rajini's efforts in expanding his market in Telugu states were paid off. Having inspired by Rajini, subsequently, a few more heroes from Kollywood tested their luck with their dubbed films and got fruitful results.
