Nayeem encounter: Former DGP hails CM

Former Director General of Police (DGP) V. Dinesh Reddy refuted the media reports that a DGP had links with the slain Maoist-turned gangster Nayeem. “Killing of Nayeem in an encounter was a good thing to happen, for which I salute Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao,” he said.

Reacting to news reports that Nayeem had links with a former DGP, Dinesh Reddy, who is also the BJP leader, told media persons that he has respect for the media but it was not proper to spread rumours to gain TRP rating. He said he wanted to clarify himself since he was one among the former DGPs in the State. Mr Reddy said he had sought an appointment with the Chief Minister so that he could pass on some vital information relating to Nayeem to the CM.

Dinesh Reddy said that he never spoke to Nayeem when he was the DGP. He also stated that no DGP-level police officer deals with informers. If necessary, DIG-level officers might utilize services of the informers. Invariably, surrendered Naxalites are used by police officers to extract information about the extremist activities, which is not improper. But the surrendered Naxalites using the names of police officials for making money and earning properties illegally is highly condemnable, he said.

“SIT is probing the case in all angles and facts would come out only after completion of investigation”, he said and suggested that media should hand over any evidence which they possess to the probing agencies.

The former DGP also said he would demand NIA investigation into the case if there were any shortcomings in the SIT probe.
